The Lotus 95T is a Formula 1 car with which the British team faced the 1984
season. The drivers are confirmed from the 1983 season: Elio De Angelis and
Nigel Mansell. The regulations for the season include a limitation to 220 liters of
gasoline to be taken on the car. Gérard Ducarouge therefore creates a car
smaller than the previous Lotus 94T, but still powered by Renault's turbocharged
engine. This car is the first Lotus to feature an "imposing" aerodynamic design,
characterized by large wings. The 95T mounts Goodyear tires, replacing Pirelli
tires, which had not performed well in the previous year. The car takes two
poles, the first on its debut with Elio De Angelis and the second with Nigel
Mansell in the U.S. Grand Prix. Very competitive in practice it would not be
as competitive in the race in which it would win a second place (with De
Angelis in Detroit), five thirds, four fourths, four fifths and a sixth place, for
a total of 47 points, which earned Lotus third place in the constructors'
championship.
